The orchestrations will give an idea of what is possible, but fewer, more or different instruments and parts can be accommodated including very basic parts to enable beginners to be included or more difficult parts for advanced players. Many of the orchestrations include a piano part, the difficulty of which can again be altered to suit or the orchestration can be revised to omit the inclusion of a piano.
If there are instrumental parts that you like the sound of but don’t have the players in your orchestra, for example double bass, oboe or glockenspiel, I have found that using a portable electronic keyboard with a small amplifier, if necessary, works really well and means that you can involve other piano/keyboard players in an orchestral situation.
Same Piece, Different Arrangement
In Major Country
Although both of the sample tracks are of the same piece, these two audio files illustrate how a different arrangement can include extra instruments and a wide range of playing abilities from very basic up to intermediate.
In Major Country - Arrangement 1 is all fairly basic. In Major Country - Arrangement 2 ranges mainly from basic up to about grade 3 but adding a more advanced flute and keyboard part really lifts the arrangement.
It’s great to include keyboard players in an orchestral situation - they benefit from the experience of playing with an orchestra and the orchestra benefits from the added dimensions a keyboard brings.
As more varied arrangements of the same pieces are composed for different ensembles and orchestras, the more interesting, illuminating and contrasting ones will be uploaded to this page.
